Opening ceremony of the 2021 Golden Rooster Youth Director Training Camp

The 2021 Golden Rooster Youth Director Training Camp was jointly organized by the China Film Association, the Xiamen Municipal Film Bureau, and the Siming District Government of Xiamen. From 52 submitted proposals, 20 young filmmakers were selected to participate in the camp's roadshow with their original works.

The five outstanding works that emerged from the process were each guided and refined through one-on-one sessions with a supervisory and mentorship committee of professional filmmakers—including Wu Bai, Dong Yue, Yao Tingting, Zhang Chi, and Huang Chaoliang—along with a professional production team. The completed films premiered on December 29, 2021.

Among them,"Window," "Tropical Cyclone," and "Sa Sha"were all shot using Kinefinity cameras. The MAVO Edge 8K demonstrated exceptional stability and flexibility across three productions—bold and visceral cinematography, fluid imagery, saturated color, and delicate quiet storytelling. These three short films span three themes: from youth to old age.

"Sa Sha"

"Sa Sha"

Director: Tan Yukun

"Sa Sha" centers on a fishing village girl's hope, struggle, and sacrifice—a young person's first confrontation with fate. To earn tuition money for school and escape the oppressive small fishing port that confines her, she buys a shark at a low price. But in the end, she chooses to help her friend, gives up her own future, and releases the shark back to the sea.

"The story in 'Sa Sha' is very raw. For the girl to make this choice, she may choose to confront the men of the fishing port—but the female character simultaneously adds a touch of fluidity and emotion to the script."

"If I get to choose a camera for my next film, Kinefinity will definitely be one of my options. It's a visual style distinct from ARRI and RED—a new visual language. That is Kinefinity."

DP Chen Xiaomeng, "Sa Sha"

"Tropical Cyclone"

Director: Chen Chuyi

"Tropical Cyclone" focuses on themes of family and marriage, observing a family of three facing sudden upheaval through the eyes of a child. It draws a parallel between the approach of a tropical cyclone and the fractures in family relationships—creating an oppressive, storm-before-the-break visual atmosphere while delicately depicting the sensitive dynamics between parents and child.

"What I wanted to create was the feeling of an approaching typhoon. The scene where the typhoon arrives is the emotional peak of the entire film."

"I've worked with footage from most cameras, and to me most of them have an electronic look—very sharp and crisp, somehow overstating the texture of real life. But Kinefinity cameras overall give me a softer feel, with a certain richness and a film-like color character. From a color science perspective, it's a look that personally appeals to me."

DP Zhang Tianshuo, "Tropical Cyclone"

"Window"

Director: Zhang Yi

"Window" confronts the unavoidable social issue of elderly care, setting the story in a nursing home and, through the lens of three generations, conveying the concept of having support and dignity in old age.

"This is an emotionally driven film—the characters' inner states are delicate and restrained, so our shooting style wasn't overly expansive or cinematically exaggerated. It was more natural."

"What impressed me most was how incredibly convenient the weight is. Beyond that, it's very stable. Throughout the entire production, there was never a single system or equipment issue—which is critically important during shooting."

DP Wang Xiaotang, "Window"
